What Is Integration?
Integration is the process of weaving the insights, emotions, and revelations of a psychedelic experience into the fabric of your daily life. It is not a passive process — it requires active engagement, reflection, and often significant lifestyle change.
The word comes from the Latin integrare — to make whole. Integration is the work of becoming whole: taking what was fragmented, buried, or disconnected within you and bringing it into conscious relationship with the rest of who you are.
Without integration, even the most profound psychedelic experience can fade like a dream — vivid in the moment, but leaving little lasting trace. With integration, a single session can be a turning point that reshapes the entire trajectory of a life.
The Neuroplasticity Window
After an ibogaine, ketamine, or MDMA session, the brain enters a period of heightened neuroplasticity — an increased capacity to form new neural connections and break old patterns. This window lasts approximately 2–4 weeks after the experience.
This is the most important period of your healing journey. The brain is literally more capable of change than at almost any other time in adult life. New habits formed during this window are more likely to stick. Old patterns interrupted during this window are less likely to reassert themselves.
The practices below are designed to make the most of this window. They are not optional extras — they are the work.
Integration Practices
Daily Journaling
Write every morning for at least 15 minutes. Do not edit. Let the unconscious speak. The insights from your session will continue to surface for weeks.
Nature Immersion
Spend time outdoors every day. The Hawaiian tradition teaches that the land itself is a healer — ʻāina (land) and ola (health/life) are inseparable. Walk barefoot on the earth when you can.
Somatic Practices
Yoga, breathwork, tai chi, or any mindful movement practice. The body holds trauma and the body releases it. Movement is integration.
Reduced Screen Time
The neuroplasticity window is precious. Protect it from the noise of social media, news, and digital overstimulation. Your nervous system needs quiet to consolidate what it has learned.
Therapy or Counseling
If you have access to a therapist — especially one familiar with psychedelic integration — this is the ideal time to work with them. The medicine has opened doors; therapy helps you walk through them.
Community and Connection
Isolation is the enemy of integration. Reach out to trusted friends, family, or a support community. Share what you are learning about yourself, carefully and selectively.
Creative Expression
Paint, draw, write poetry, make music. The right brain has been activated by your experience — give it a channel of expression.
Sleep and Rest
Prioritize 8–9 hours of sleep during the integration period. Much of the neural consolidation happens during sleep. This is not laziness — it is healing.
Integration Support at Pō a Ao
Every program at Pō a Ao includes 30 days of post-session integration support. This includes:
The Return to Ao
In the Kumulipo, the transition from Pō to Ao is not a single moment — it is a gradual emergence. Life forms appear one by one, each building on the last, each more complex and luminous than what came before. The darkness does not disappear; it becomes the foundation upon which the light stands.
This is the truth of integration. You do not leave the darkness behind — you bring it with you, transformed. The pain, the trauma, the patterns that brought you here do not vanish. They become wisdom. They become the foundation of a deeper, more rooted, more luminous life.
"O ke au i kahuli wela ka honua
O ke au i kahuli lole ka lani
O ke au i kuka'iaka ka la""At the time when the earth became hot / At the time when the heavens turned about / At the time when the sun was darkened" — Kumulipo, Wā I (First Era)
The Kumulipo begins in darkness and heat — in the primordial conditions of creation. Integration is your personal Kumulipo: the slow, patient emergence of a new self from the fertile darkness of your healing journey.
